  1. Welcome to the Friends of Norman Park. We are a voluntary group helping to take care of the park for the community and wildlife to enjoy.

We have regular work days in park, including litter picks, footpath clearing, gardening and maintaining facilities in the park. We are currently working on improving the biodiversity and creating new wildlife habitats and gardens.

We also run sports, wellbeing, food, music, arts and crafts events for families throughout the year, including Bonkers for Conkers and Carols in the Park.

New volunteers and members are always welcomed.

History

  1. History image goes here
  2. Norman Park was created in 1896, originally known as Fartown Recreation Ground the park comprised of just under 2 acres of land. In 1921 a memorial to the those from the Fartown and Birkby district who died in the First World War was erected.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the park suffered from misuse, vandalism, fly-tipping and a lack of investment. In 1998 Friends of Norman Park was created to tackle these issues, by lobbying Kirklees Council to address the backlog of maintenance tasks and repair damage caused by vandalism.

Over the past 20 years we have developed a good working relationship with Kirklees Parks and Green Space and local Councillors, as all of us have a shared interest in wanting to improve Norman Park.
