History

  1. We raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). We can trace our history back to 1931 when fundraising started in Mirfield with the RNLI Mirfield Ladies Guild. In 1998, at a ceremony in Leeds, the RNLI presented them with a gavel for long service. By this time husbands had become involved as helpers, so the name was changed to the RNLI Mirfield Fundraising Branch.

In the past fundraising efforts have ranged from Casino Nights, Burns Night Suppers, Dewsbury Music Centre Swing Band evenings, Quiz Nights and Race Nights, with great support from local venues.

More recently our souvenir stall has appeared regularly at local events, including the Mirfield Agricultural Show, Kirklees Model Boat Club events at Wilton Park Batley, Kumon Y'All in Savile Town Dewsbury, Upper Hopton Spring and Autumn Fairs, Christ The King Christmas Fair, Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club, South Pennine Boat Club and at Mirfield Fire Station for bonfire night. We fundraise at local supermarkets and have collection boxes in shops, public houses and schools.

The RNLI, the fourth emergency service, which receives no government funding, costs approx £188M a year to run. We operate 441 lifeboats in 238 lifeboat stations and equip and train 9,700 lifeboat & lifeguards men and women. Founded in 1824 to save lives at sea, we also have 1,632 beach lifeguards who patrol on 242 beaches.

Our small group of volunteers are dedicated to raising money for the RNLI through collections and local events. We are always ready to welcome new volunteers and new helpers are assured of a friendly welcome. If you have just an hour to spare, or want to become more involved please contact us through our secretary details as above.
