  1. The forum is open to anyone who lives or works in the Newsome area. We have regular meetings for residents, community groups, volunteers and officers working in Newsome. We meet to share information about local groups and events, and to look at issues of concern in the Newsome Ward. There are guest speakers and refreshments at each meeting.

We also run and support a range of community based activities, including Newsome Out To Play, the Newsome Kiddies' Christmas party and the Hey Green community orchard.

Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of January, March, May, July, September and November. Meetings start at 6pm in the Community Room at Newsome High School (food available from 5.45pm onwards).

Residents recover stolen war memorial

  1. Residents recover stolen war memorial
  2. Members of Newsome Ward Community Forum have recovered a war memorial that was stolen from Newsome Mills.

The bronze war memorial plaque had been proudly displayed inside the main gates to Newsome Mills since 1921, in deference to seven local mill workers who lost their lives in the First World War. However, the plaque disappeared from the wall of the mill's office building in February 2008.

Newsome Ward Community Forum made a public appeal on behalf of local residents, asking for the war memorial to be returned. The Forum were delighted when the memorial plaque was handed over anonymously to one of their members.

Sadly, it appears that the memorial was stolen for scrap metal value, and the plaque has sustained some damage due to being forced away from the wall. The surface of the bronze plaque is now buckled, and there is a deep gash across the decorative border.

Royalle Estates, who own Newsome Mills, have asked Newsome Ward Community Forum to hold on to the memorial until it can be returned to the mill site.

Newsome Ward Community Forum have agreed to:

    1. Keep the memorial safe.
    2. Get the damage to the memorial assessed.
    3. Get the memorial restored by a professional conservator.
    4. Raise funds for this work to be carried out.
    5. Return the memorial to its rightful place at Newsome Mills.

If you would like to get involved in Newsome Ward Community Forum's campaign, please contact Diane Sims. Tel. 07941 652836 or email sims31@btinternet.com
