History

  1. Honley Male Voice Choir (Honley MVC) was formed in 1936, thanks to the vision of Ben Kinder, a beloved local figure with a passion for sport and music. The choir’s inaugural rehearsal took place on 9 November 1936, at the Southgate Methodist School, which later became the Southgate Theatre. Honley MVC has grown to become one of the leading male voice choirs in West Yorkshire, renowned for its diverse repertoire and commitment to excellence in choral singing. Over the decades, the choir has performed at prestigious venues such as Wembley, Twickenham, and Old Trafford, and has collaborated with international stars, including Lesley Garrett.

Today, the choir boasts 65 members, with a steady influx of new recruits drawn by the wide-ranging repertoire and the opportunity to develop their singing skills under the guidance of Musical Director Steven Roberts who has extensive experience in music and the performing arts. In 2026, Honley MVC will celebrate its 90th anniversary, marking nearly a century of musical achievement, community engagement, and charitable contributions. To commemorate this milestone, the choir is planning a series of exciting events designed to honour its rich history and vibrant future. These celebrations are set to engage choir members, the local community, and music enthusiasts from near and far.
