  1. HappyMOMents CIO is a volunteer-led charitable organisation based in North Kirklees, dedicated to supporting women, children, and families—particularly those from the global majority- through a range of inclusive, community-based services. Our work is shaped by lived experience, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to improving outcomes for families facing multiple and intersecting vulnerabilities.
Our organisation is guided by four core charitable objectives:
    1. To promote and protect the physical and mental health of women, children, and their families through the provision of antenatal, postnatal, and perinatal services, activities, classes, and peer support groups.
    2. To prevent or relieve poverty in North Kirklees through community-led interventions and practical support.
    3. To advance education for women, children, and families via accessible learning opportunities and developmental activities.
    4. To relieve those in need due to youth, age, ill health, disability, or financial hardship.

Our main areas of delivery—Batley East, Dewsbury South, and Ravensthorpe—fall within the 10–20% most deprived areas in England, as identified by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (Kirklees IMD Report). Many of the families we work with face long-standing challenges related to poverty, isolation, language barriers, and limited access to services. These issues are compounded by cultural and systemic inequalities, making our work both urgent and essential.

We are based at the former Saviletown Children’s Centre, adjacent to Pentland I&N School. This location is central and accessible for the families we support, and we benefit from a strong relationship with the school’s leadership and Kirklees Asset Management, who maintain the building and support our community sessions. We also deliver services at other community centres across North Kirklees to ensure families can access support close to home.

Our team is made up of volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds—including education, healthcare, and social care—who share a commitment to improving provision for parents and children. Some of our volunteers are also volunteering with us as their first step into employment and training, as well as giving back to the community in the process. We work collaboratively with local organisations such as the Maternity Voices Partnership, BBEST, The Fields, Locala Health Visiting, NHS Midwifery, and local schools and nurseries. These partnerships enable us to reach families early—often from conception—and provide consistent, trusted support throughout their parenting journey.

    Our regular programmes include:

Antenatal classes: Preparing expectant mothers for birth and early parenting, with culturally sensitive and accessible information.

Baby massage and sensory play: Supporting bonding, development, and wellbeing in the early months.

Toddler sensory and Stay & Play sessions: Encouraging early learning, socialisation, school readiness and parental bonding and engagement for those early development stages.

Support for single mothers: Providing peer connection, emotional support, and practical advice as well as financial support wherever possible.

Community fundays and seasonal events: Creating opportunities for families to connect, celebrate, and access resources and services as we often cohost these with local organisations.

We also focus on volunteer development, offering training and work experience opportunities for individuals seeking careers in Early Years, Teaching, and related sectors. Many of our volunteers are local women who face barriers to employment and benefit from the chance to build skills, confidence, and professional networks. We support them by linking with local providers and offering hands-on experience that is otherwise difficult to access in our area.

Our outreach efforts are strengthened by our relationships with local schools, libraries, and nurseries, through which we cascade information and promote our services. We are regularly signposted to by health professionals and maternity services, ensuring families are aware of our support from the earliest stages of their journey.

HappyMOMents CIO is proud to be a trusted anchor in the community—responsive, inclusive, and deeply rooted in the needs of local families. Our work is driven by compassion, evidence, and a belief in the transformative power of early support and education.

History

  1. HappyMOMents came about out when two Moms with children of a similar age living in a similar area came together sharing a need to respond to the reduction in support for new moms and babies in the Batley & Dewsbury area. We are Sara and Sumayya and we wanted to do something to address the impact that the lack of support was having on us and those Moms around us. Using both our skillsets (Public Health and Education) and our circles of influence we developed a model that would respond and deliver that much needed support.
HappyMOMents was built on a public health prevention approach using evidence which shows that building resilience and supporting health and wellbeing outcomes has a wider impact, on families, the community and improves physical and mental health overall. The approach incorporated local community assets such as local moms leading initiatives and delivering sessions at local venues.
HappyMOMents started as a peer to peer led volunteer group who now are the best of friends and through this journey have shared the highs & lows of our parenting but also shared these experiences with moms we engage with.
Having a shared a vision to improve parenting experience, we wanted to make services and positive educational experiences easier to access here in Batley & Dewsbury, especially as funding cuts had impacted critical preventative services in recent years.
Our core team of 11 is formed of professionals in Public Health, Primary Healthcare, Education, Infant Massage, Fitness and Breastfeeding Peer Supporters, all of whom are local residents and moms or practitioners with a wealth of experience.
Our networks are predominantly on Whatsapp as Moms preferred to have this ‘instant connection’ (We have platforms on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter too):
    • We supportand inspire more than 800+ moms and families in the Batley & Dewsbury area
    • We are open to all communities, even though our network is predominantly BAME
    • We actively seek opportunities to engage & support Fathers in their parenting too
    • We work together with other partner organisations like BBEST, Local Nurseries, SWYT, NHS Midwifery, Locala, Kirklees Adult Education Service& the Local Maternity Voices Partnership to ensure that local families have the best opportunities for help & support when they need it
    • We seek funding to bring in exciting opportunities to the Batley & Dewsbury Areas which we would otherwise miss out on
    • Educational outcomes are very important to us; Our stay & play sessions are focussed on enhancing language development through Makaton, rhyme & stories
    • We actively support families with SEND & are proud to have become the first Makaton Friendly Organisation in the area
We firmly believe that women are stronger when they help each other; we are!

Sara and Sumayya (Co founders) and The entire HappyMOMents Team
