  1. Stirley Community Farm covers 240 acres of land which was once intensively farmed. The farm was abandoned around the start of the 21st Century and the land and farm buildings fell into disrepair. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust took over the site in 2011 to provide a base for protecting wildlife across West Yorkshire. We strive to share our knowledge with others and make sure our woodlands, rivers and grasslands are enjoyed by local people and wildlife alike, and protected for future generations.

Since taking on ownership Yorkshire Wildlife Trust staff and dedicated volunteers have restored an old barn into an excellent education facility, developed a thriving food training garden, planted a delicious fruit orchard, established a grazing program and introduced bee hives. We have also developed a number of educational visits linked to the curriculum to support the education of local school and college students, and offered additional opportunities for Special Education Needs schools. We have also provided agricultural and conservation training to a whole host of young people. We run a programme of monthly and seasonal events throughout the year which all help to connect people of all ages to their local wildlife – see here for more information www.ywt.org.uk/events

We will continue with our successful events and education programme, we want to reach even more of the local community and explore how Stirley can benefit them further. We provide real working experiences for our voluntary trainees and young students, who learn the ropes in conservation and wildlife protection. We will also continue to graze our land with cattle that will help create the conditions for wildflowers and local wildlife can thrive. And of course, we will continue to make wildlife our priority whilst supporting local people to access the land, creating chances for them to get involved and benefit from this fantastic local greenspace in a way that works for them.
