History

  1. Huddersfield was one of the first centres of Methodism in Britain, and there have been vibrant Methodist chapels in our thriving town since 1775. Methodists have always been clear that no-one is beyond the reach of God's love. We believe that it's possible for everyone to become the people that God intended them to be - loved, whole, fulfilled, valued, and included. Methodists are called to play their part in making this possible through worship, learning & caring, service and sharing this 'good news'. We have an emphasis on faith and action as essential to Christian living.

Historically, this has often been focussed in a particular way in what we call Missions. The first Methodist Mission in Huddersfield was formally established in 1906 as Queen Street Mission (now the Lawrence Batley Theatre). In 1970 we moved to the King Street Mission (on the site of what is now the Kingsgate Centre). Then, in 2000, as the first new Church building of the new millennium in Kirklees, we began a new phase of our life at Huddersfield Methodist Mission in Lord Street. We have continued to be a Christian community concerned with the well-being and wholeness of all God's children. We host and run a variety of social action projects in co-operation with many caring agencies and alongside other faith communities. The words cut into the stonework of the Mission building say it all : Dedicated to the Glory of God and the Service of the Needy. That's our clear focus.
