About the event
Would you love to find a new hobby, learn new skills, make friends and keep history alive in your local museum. Visit the museum this weekend to see our volunteers in action and have a go at learning some new ‘old Victorian’ skills.
Try your hand at weaving, spinning, clogging, bread making and see if you would like to learn more.
We are looking for volunteers for the:
schools' team
outreach visits
tearoom
maintenance
collections
weaving
spinning
clogging
washing
baking & bread team.
There will be a role for you, or multiples roles you can have a go at. The minimum we ask is one shift per month however if you would like to do more that would be welcomed. Come along and have look around and a chat to see if you would like to join any of our teams.
The Museum will be bustling with activity - the bread bakers will be busy in our Victorian Kitchen and the aroma will float through the Museum. Chat to the bakers about how they make the bread and buy some to take home. It is delicious!! See if they'll let you have a go at kneeding the dough and see if you'd like to join their team.
The Loom Chamber on the top floor was the hub of the weaving business - large looms fill the room. The long run of windows light the room, and there is a great view of the Colne Valley. There will be demonstrations of weaving on our weaving looms. The Weavers will be delighted to explain how the looms work and show you what they are working on and how life as a loom weaver would be. Could you be the next weaver?
In the Spinning room our spinners will be delighted to talk to you about the tools which were used in the weaving industry such as smaller looms, spinning jennies and spinning wheels. Discover the process of making yarn and thread. Would you like to learn this art and be able to show others how life used to be?
Next door is the Edwardian Clog Makers shop. Learn about the history of clogs and Golcar's long history of clog making. Find out who wore the clogs and the different designs and try some on to see how comfortable they are. Would you like to join the team and learn how to clog? Clogging is on the red list of endangered crafts! We need to train more people in this area to keep the skill of clogging going.
Finish off your visit to Spring Rock Tearoom where there will be delicious homemade cakes, and refreshments then visit our shop for cards, gifts, books, and products unique to Colne Valley Museum. The tearoom is looking for new volunteers too so have a chat with someone whilst having a cuppa and see if there is somewhere you feel you would fit in.
