Explore the great outdoors this May Half Term with hands-on activities, woodland wonders and much more.
Makers’ Shed
Daily, Free, Drop-in

Get creative and make tree-themed crafts, from a peg doll to a gemstone bookmark.
Canary Capers Puppet Show

What has Sparky the Canary been up to? Find out about his capers in our shadow puppet sure to delight the young at heart.
Encounters with Trees
Daily, Sitewide
Discover different types of trees and how wood was used in the mining industry, by finding ten beautifully crafted benches across our site.
Steam Winder Demonstrations
Daily, 11am-2pm
See how a few puffs of steam can work with some giant machinery to move the mighty Pit Wheel.
Hope Pit Explore

Explore Hope Pit to understand the functions of giant mechanical machinery and explore the Lister-Kaye Tunnel.

The Railways of Caphouse Tour

Unearth the secrets of our coal’s incredible journey, from the mighty locomotives that carried it, to the hidden passage that saw it vanish far away from site.
Reed Bed Tour

Discover how we pump and purify orange mine water, through our innovative water treatment system.

£5 per child, pre-bookable
Make impressions into clay with organic materials to create a unique botanical relief casting.
Other activities include the Power House (open daily 10am-4pm), Nature Trail, Paddy Train (weather dependent), Horsekeeper talks (12pm & feeding 2:30pm), Pithead Baths Explore (12pm daily), Discovery Spots, and lots, lots more!
