Gathering in Silence

  1. Quakers believe there is a spiritual centre to our lives and that it is possible to contact that centre in everyone. Waiting in stillness for the promptings of the Spirit, Friends seek to know each other in the things that are eternal, and to cherish the world we live in and the lives of all is our precious responsibility.

History

  1. Quakers have met at High Flatts since the mid-seventeenth century. The meeting house dating from the early eighteenth century was built on the site of a barn where the earliest Quaker meetings were held. The present building is mainly nineteenth century in construction, and was the heart of an active Quaker village, with its own adult school, hostel for resident gatherings at Strines nearby. Friends also ran a primitive rehabilitation centre for inebriate women.
