  1. A monthly true story open mic night. The open mic is a platform and space to share true stories loosely exploring the month’s themes. Everyone has a story. Readers at the event might be writers, readers, and anyone in between. We love a good true story no matter who it comes from. All (over 18) are welcome. The true stories might be told through prose, poetry, hybrid and might be in any form of development from first draft to complete. The open mic is free and includes free refreshments.

Supported by Kirklees Libraries, Kirklees Community Plus, Kirklees Community Cohesion Group, and led by writer Yvonne Battle-Felton.

History

  1. Our first open mic was held in April 2022. The open mic started because Yvonne Battle-Felton had moved to Dewsbury and needed a way to meet people and get to know Dewsbury. The Kirklees Community Cohesion Team has been a valued supporter even before the first event, providing information and access to networks, advice, and a supportive ear. Kirklees Libraries is more than a venue. They recognized the need for a space for people to connect after Covid and a way to bring people together. Librarian Sarah Preston is a valued co-host providing energy, enthusiasm, networks, and support. We have a group of volunteers that make the event a success. They offer time, access to wider communities, and help to create the welcoming environment we strive for. In April 2023 we celebrated our one-year anniversary. Thanks to funding from Kirklees Community Plus, we can offer even more food to bring people together.
