History

  1. HappyMOMents came about out when two Moms with children of a similar age living in a similar area came together sharing a need to respond to the reduction in support for new moms and babies in the Batley & Dewsbury area. We are Sara and Sumayya and we wanted to do something to address the impact that the lack of support was having on us and those Moms around us. Using both our skillsets (Public Health and Education) and our circles of influence we developed a model that would respond and deliver that much needed support.
HappyMOMents was built on a public health prevention approach using evidence which shows that building resilience and supporting health and wellbeing outcomes has a wider impact, on families, the community and improves physical and mental health overall. The approach incorporated local community assets such as local moms leading initiatives and delivering sessions at local venues.
HappyMOMents started as a peer to peer led volunteer group who now are the best of friends and through this journey have shared the highs & lows of our parenting but also shared these experiences with moms we engage with.
Having a shared a vision to improve parenting experience, we wanted to make services and positive educational experiences easier to access here in Batley & Dewsbury, especially as funding cuts had impacted critical preventative services in recent years.
Our core team of 11 is formed of professionals in Public Health, Primary Healthcare, Education, Infant Massage, Fitness and Breastfeeding Peer Supporters, all of whom are local residents and moms or practitioners with a wealth of experience.
Our networks are predominantly on Whatsapp as Moms preferred to have this ‘instant connection’ (We have platforms on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter too):
    • We supportand inspire more than 800+ moms and families in the Batley & Dewsbury area
    • We are open to all communities, even though our network is predominantly BAME
    • We actively seek opportunities to engage & support Fathers in their parenting too
    • We work together with other partner organisations like BBEST, Local Nurseries, SWYT, NHS Midwifery, Locala, Kirklees Adult Education Service& the Local Maternity Voices Partnership to ensure that local families have the best opportunities for help & support when they need it
    • We seek funding to bring in exciting opportunities to the Batley & Dewsbury Areas which we would otherwise miss out on
    • Educational outcomes are very important to us; Our stay & play sessions are focussed on enhancing language development through Makaton, rhyme & stories
    • We actively support families with SEND & are proud to have become the first Makaton Friendly Organisation in the area
We firmly believe that women are stronger when they help each other; we are!

Sara and Sumayya (Co founders) and The entire HappyMOMents Team
