  1. People with a visual Impairment who need help with rehabilitation, information and advice can now get it from Sight Kirklees Independent Enabling Service (SKIES).

Some people with sight loss need support to re-learn things which were once familiar to them. SKIES will work with people across the district to help them make the best use of their sight as well as supporting family and carers. SKIES can provide practical help such as advice on lighting, colour contrasts, magnification and equipment. Other support includes training on daily living skills such as making a hot drink or preparing a meal, getting out and about and mobility training such as using a long cane safely outdoors.

The SKIES service is delivered from 12 New Street, Huddersfield which will act as the main contact point for all residents across the district. Support will also be offered in people’s homes and community locations across Kirklees.

SKIES have been contracted by Kirklees Council to build on the good work of Dewsbury and Batley Society for the Blind who previously held the contract for this work. People currently using the rehabilitation service will continue to receive support from the same staff that have transferred to
    SKIES.

The SKIES service forms part of a range of support that is available across Kirklees to help people with a visual impairment. Please contact Gateway to Care for details of all services for blind and visually impaired people.
