History

  1. History image goes here
  2. In November 2009 The FairTraders Co-operative launched its share offer to local people and businesses. In it was outlined the radical idea that they would only source the very best examples of goods in terms of their social, environmental and economic impacts, be they local or from developing countries. Furthermore, they would provide their customers with an assessment and rating of each of these products, their raw materials, use and disposal; offering transparency and the opportunity to discuss each product''s sustainability with us over an interactive website.

The launch took the five founder directors somewhat by surprise as people queued to sign up to invest in the co-operative. They were soon joined by others from around the UK and as far away as Nepal, Kenya, and Australia. Within five months they had reached their target of 100,000 pounds along with a grant and loan from Key Fund Yorkshire. Encouraged by the local appetite for this brand new type of business and by the support of Harriet Lamb from The Fair Trade Foundation, local and national politicians, and NGOs, they have worked hard to bring together an exciting range of goods both local and from the developing world, with fantastic stories behind them. With nearly 400 members and rising, they are building a far flung community of fair and ethical trade supporters who want to know the full impacts of their purchases.
