  1. The Museum is housed in restored weavers cottages. Local rooms and crafts in period setting of the 1850s. Regular special exhibitions and event weekends. School and other group visits by arrangement.

    New opening times:
    Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays,12 noon until 4pm

    Admission charges:
    All adults £3; all accompanied children free.

    The Museum has many opportunities for volunteers, and always welcomes enquiries.

Events and activities

Activities

Regular meetings or activities, usually on a weekly or monthly basis, and exhibitions of more than a week.

Your activities will appear on our ‘Things to do’ pages. You can include any regular ongoing activities that people can join in with, such as scouts and guides, youth clubs, craft groups, dancing, sports clubs and gardening clubs.

Venue

If you want to change your venue or add a new one please use the postcode / street name field to see a list of venues. This should cover all venues in Kirklees, but if you can’t find the venue you need please contact Community Directory, and we will advise or add it for you.

    The nature of the building means that wheelchair users only have access to the ground floor via a setted road on a gradient, or the top floor via a level tarmac road. Full access statement available from the museum on request.

History

  1. Colne Valley Museum is a small independent community museum run by volunteers, It is housed in a terrace of weavers cottages in the village of Golcar about 3 miles south west of Huddersfield. The terrace, known as 'Spring Rock' was built between 1840 and 1845 by James and Sally Pearson and is Grade 2 listed and in the local conservation area.

    The museum depicts the Cottage Textile Industry and Domestic Life in the Victorian period and has a collection policy from 1820 to 1920, an established education service, mounts new exhibitions every six weeks and has a reputation for innovation in the voluntary sector.
