  1. Vernacular buildings are typical for an area - using local materials and often built by local craftsmen - in practice up to end of 19th century. The group studies those of Yorkshire. There are building recording days, walkabout tours and an annual training and recording conference.

Meet usually 4 or 5 times per annum.

Normally we add categories for you when the entry is set up, but you have the option to edit them. Very occasionally some categories have restricted usage and we’ll let you know if we feel there’s a problem.

The categories are tiered with the broadest first. Click on the plus sign till you find the specific categories that best suit your group.

News

You can add or amend news items, and the date will change automatically, although you may need to go back into the entry to see the revised date.

To delete a news item, there is a delete option when you press Edit. This currently works only on the headline, and the text field needs to be saved with at least one digit in it, e.g. ‘x’. Alternatively, you can replace it with a new item.

South Yorkshire

  1. Following the election of Peter Thornborrow as Chair of the YVBSG, the Group is extending the geographical scope of its studies into South Yorkshire. This has resulted in recording work around Barnsley (2017), Rotherham (2018) , Hallamshire and the Dark Peak (2019) and Doncaster district (2020). Further studies across the region are planned for 2021.

History

  1. The Group was formed in the 1970s to study traditional buildings in North Yorkshire and Cleveland. Activities expanded to cover the whole of Yorkshire in the 1980s and there is an archive of 1900 building surveys (2020) held at the Yorkshire Archaeological and Historical Society Special Collection at the Brotherton Library of Leeds University.
