History

  1. Fundraising in Mirfield for RNLI (Lifeboats) started in 1931 with the Ladies Guild and in 1998, at a ceremony in Leeds, the RNLI presented them with a gavel for long service. By this time husbands had become involved as helpers so the name was changed to the Mirfield Branch to include men.

Flag Days have been held in Mirfield since 1971.

In the past fundraising efforts have ranged from Casino Nights, Burns Night Suppers and the talented Dewsbury Music Centre Swing Band. More recently we have done Quiz Nights and Race Nights, with great support from local venues.

In recent years our souvenir stall has appeared regularly at local public events including Mirfield Agricultural Show, South Pennine Boat Club Gala Dewsbury Canal Festival, Kumon Y'all, Kirkheaton Gala, Kirklees Model Boat Club at Wilton Park Batley, Little Gomersal Summer Festival, Christ The King Christmas Fair, etc., and also at Mirfield Fire Station for bonfire night.

We also do collections at local supermarkets in nearby towns.

We raise money for this charity - the fourth emergency service which receives no government funding and costs approx £163.5M a year to maintain 431 lifeboats in 238 lifeboat stations and equip and train 9,178 lifeboat & lifeguards men and women. Founded in 1824 to save lives at sea, it now also trains beach lifeguards, and assists at floods inland and overseas.

We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution through collections and local events. We are always ready to welcome new volunteers and new helpers are assured of a friendly welcome. If you have just an hour to spare, or want to become more involved please contact us through our secretary details as above.
