  1. The principal aim of Kirklees Youth Justice Service (YJS) is to prevent offending by children and young people.

    We seek to fulfil this aim by:
    • working with others to prevent crime and the fear of crime while meeting the needs of victims and communities;

    • ensuring that children and young people who do offend are dealt with without delay and punished, having regard to the seriousness and frequency of their offending;

    • ensuring that our work with children and young people reduces the risk of offending and reoffending and reinforces the responsibilities of parents.

    The YJS is a multi-agency team comprising of staff from police, probation, health, education, children and young people service, careers, connexions, housing and drugs agencies. Although the YJS primarily works in the criminal justice field, it is placed within Children's Services.

    One of the key tasks for those staff working in the YJS is to balance the needs of the young person with the delivery of court ordered sanctions that retain the confidence of the judiciary and protect the public. The unique and multi-agency approach of the YJS not only focuses directly on offending behaviour but also addresses some of the underlying factors that contribute, explaining the presence of health and other specialist workers.

    We have offices in both Huddersfield (South) and Dewsbury (North). The services we provide range from working with those at risk of offending, through a whole range of community penalties, up to and including young people in custody.

    The YJS is responsible to a local Management Board which is made up of chief and senior officers of the funding agencies plus other key representatives who have specific knowledge of the local criminal justice system and the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales, which is responsible for overseeing performance and standards; this non-government agency also provides a third of the YJS's annual budget.
