History

  1. The organisation was founded in 1946 by parents to provide some kind of day activity for their children who were regarded as ineducable. The parents also supported each other at a time when the advice from the professionals was put them in a home. At that time it was known as the Huddersfield Society for Retarded Children.

In the eighties the organisation (by then known as Huddersfield Mencap) became a service provider with the first group home in the area and the first independent day service.

In 1993 we started to support people in their own homes and in 2001 launched a scheme to match volunteers with people with learning disabilities to enjoy social activities together.
In 1996 we celebrated our Golden Anniversary by forming a theatre company at the Lawrence Batley Theatre - this has now gone on to become the independent company Full Body and The Voice.

In 2008 we merged with SHARE in Batley to become Mencap in Kirklees.
