  1. The Dewsbury and District League of Friendship, or Howlands as it is more commonly known, is a small independent charity formed in 1952. We are run by our members for the members, with the help of voluntary workers and a small team of paid staff. We are proud to champion the creative abilities of our community and make a difference to many people's loneliness and sense of belonging.

Howlands (Charity Name: Dewsbury and District League of Friendship, Number 1184667) is a Community Hub based in a fit for purpose building in the heart of Dewsbury. The building has significant benefits to regular attendees and the wider local community and provides an attractive modern meeting space for use by individuals and associations from the Dewsbury area and wider Kirklees Region.

At Howlands we work to promote and assist the welfare of people who are disadvantaged through health, disability, poverty, cultural issues, bereavement and anything else that may trigger loneliness and/or social isolation. We offer support to those who are vulnerable, marginalised and isolated. We do this through art based activities in a safe, comfortable environment in our fully modernised building on School Street, Dewsbury. We help people discover new creative and/or practical skills with opportunities to develop social skills and make new friends in friendly relaxed surroundings.

“Howlands saved my life, it truly did. I love the place. The staff are wonderful people and I just feel calm and safe when I’m here.” - Jane, regular attendee at Howlands.

For any enquiries about coming and joining our community or to support a friend of family member, please telephone 01924 463693 or feel free to call in any time, Mon- Fri between 9.30 am - 3.30pm.

Howlands also has capacity to take room bookings, aimed at local charities and support groups and also available for commercial and/or conferencing functions. Centre Manager, Deborah says, “We feel that our refurbishment is a very positive statement in the regeneration of Dewsbury and we look forward to being at the hub of the resurgence of local community involvement.” For details of room layouts please visit our website www.howlands.org.uk. Booking enquiries or arrangements to visit us should be directed to Deborah on 01924 463693.
