  1. Vajrapani Kadampa Meditation Centre in Huddersfield. We are Modern Kadampa Buddhists and everybody is welcome, non-Buddhist or Buddhist, who wishes to develop greater inner peace through meditation and Buddha’s teachings. We're a residential community and we are a voluntary organisation. We welcome new volunteers. Please see our website for further information: meditateinhuddersfield.org

We meet, hear talks, meditate and discuss with like-minded people and then apply what we learn to our everyday life. It is not at all necessary to have had any previous experience of meditation or Buddhism to participate.

We provide a peaceful space where you can discover the benefits of meditation, and the peace that modern Buddhism can offer.

There are weekly drop-in meditation classes at our Centre and in Denby Dale, and weekend courses to suit everyone, whether you are completely new to meditation or have more experience.

The centre is a registered charity. Vajrapani Centre is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition – founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. You can learn more about the NKT on the Kadampa website https://www.kadampa.org/

Please see our website for more details.

Our Centre and Resident Teacher

  2. Buddhism is more than 5000 years old so it's not surprising that different traditions and practices have evolved over time. Until recently members of the New Kadampa Tradition were based in a small terraced-house in Belmont Street, Huddersfield but, as the community grew, there was a need to find new accommodation.

When Huddersfield's New Kadampa Buddhists first put in a bid for Birkby Baptist Church it was still being used for Christian worship. Today it's the Vajrapani Kadampa Meditation Centre, providing a home for both lay and ordained members of the community. Work to improve the centre and gardens is carried out by members and volunteers providing a secluded courtyard garden on one side where people can sit quietly or eat together in the warmer months.

Gen Kelsang Varahi has been the resident teacher at the Centre since 2015 and has been a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for more than 25 years. She is known for her clear, practical approach, her kind, good heart and for showing the natural joy that comes from applying Buddha’s teachings in daily life.

History

  1. Vajrapani Kadampa Meditation Centre is a charity organisation in Huddersfield where you can learn about meditation and Buddhist teachings. It was founded in 1997 by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche as a registered charity and is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT).

The centre has a friendly residential and extended community making all visitors feel welcome and comfortable. It is home to a community of both lay and ordained practitioners. Regular meditation classes are held within the centre, as are more in-depth study programs. There is a branch class at Denby Dale.

Since it was first established in the Highfields area of Huddersfield Vajrapani Centre had flourished. It outgrew the Highfields property and moved to Birkby Baptist Church. The historic Grade II Listed building has a large main meditation room and lounge/library/dining area upstairs and the residence area downstairs.

The Founder of Modern Kadampa Buddhism was Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, a world-renowned meditation master who held the very essence of Buddha’s teachings in his heart. Venerable Geshe-la transmitted this profound wisdom and compassion to the people of the modern world in very practical ways through the extremely accessible methods of modern Kadampa Buddhism, which he introduced. He wrote 23 highly acclaimed books and established over 1200 Kadampa Buddhist centres and groups worldwide and founded 6 temples around the world.
