History

  1. Cyril Vicars of Gildersome, and the late Edric Gee of Huddersfield held the first meeting of the Huddersfield Big Band Society, aka HUBBS, at the Crown Hotel in Westgate on 16 April 1978. Despite little advertising, the place was packed, and they realised that there was a huge demand for big band music in the town. The fledgling society soon spread its wings and began to stage live bands - most notably at the Hilton Hotel, Ainley Top - as well as recorded music sessions on BBC Radio 2 with the Monday night BBC Big Band presented by Shiela Tracey. For over 25 years monthly audiences of several hundred people enjoyed some of the best 'live' big bands in the country, and from Europe. In the last 16 years due to rising costs, 'Live' music gigs have ceased, but the recorded music continues profiling the very best in Big Band Jazz and Swing. HUBBS continues to present monthly programmes with two shows at each meeting presented by members, and guests from the big band world and radio.

Says founder-member and chairman Cyril Vicars: It's astonishing to think that from a single meeting in 1978 HUBBS became one of the UK's leading big band promoters, and after 41 years is still in good health.
