  1. HDAS was set up in 1956 to encourage individual and collective archaeological activities in the Huddersfield area and to promote interest in the archaeology of any period up to the present day. It also aims to create and encourage contact with the Yorkshire Archaeological Society and with other neighbouring archaeological societies and organisations. It is fair to say that some of our activities have been curtailed by the recent Pandemic but we are now working hard to resume these.

A lecture series is held, usually on the first Friday of each month, from October to April (excluding January). We recommend that you consult our website (details below) and Facebook page from time to ensure that you are aware of any changes/additions to the programme. These talks attract speakers from the top rank of professional archaeologists and researchers as well as amateur specialists with a depth of archaeological knowledge and/or expertise (including some of our own members). The illustrated talks are usually held at the Heritage Quay, University of Huddersfield at 7.45pm although some may be delivered via Zoom to accommodate the requirements of a particular speaker. Non-members are very welcome and pay an admission charge of £2.50 at Heritage Quay .

Please note that our November 3rd lecture will be delivered via Zoom and details will be available on Facebook and our website nearer the time.

The Society publishes occasional books. Also, members receive a quarterly newsletter which includes reports on excavations being carried out and items which will be of interest.
We also provide information to our members about talks and activities run by other organisations such as the Council for British Archaeology and the Yorkshire Archaeological Society.

One of the aims of our Society is to encourage individual and collective archaeological activities in the Huddersfield area and, when possible, we do provide opportunities for members to become involved in surveys and excavations.

Membership is open to all. Application forms can be obtained by emailing our Membership Secretary.
