  1. The Standedge Tunnel and Visitor Centre is a great introduction to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, a waterway of startling contrasts, from tranquil countryside to dramatic mills.

Standedge Tunnel is the highest (196 metres above sea level), longest (5,029 metres) and deepest canal (194 metres) in the country. The project was started in 1794 at the height of 'Canal Mania' period and took 17 years to complete - with a little help from one of Britain's greatest civil engineers, Thomas Telford.

There are regular family boat trips.. We also have two-hour trips, which run on a regular basis, and go through the entire length of the 3.25 mile long tunnel.

Our Watersedge Cafe offers a selection of freshly made lunches and cakes, and is well-placed for anyone planning a walk along the canal towpath. There are also play areas for children.

Please visit our website for full details including opening times and prices.

History

  1. Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre is owned by British Waterways. It stands on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal (c1794) at the entrance to the highest, longest and deepest canal tunnel in the country.

The project was started in 1794 at the height of 'Canal Mania' period and took 17 years to complete.

More can be learnt by taking a 30-minute tunnel trip aboard our glass topped boat, while one of our guides explains all about the geology and history of the tunnel as well as providing tales of the folk who designed, built and later worked in the tunnel.
