Black History Month Kirklees

About the event

October is Black History Month (BHM) in the UK and it has been celebrated nationwide every year for nearly 40 years. Each year Kirklees celebrates Black History Month and this year due to the coronavirus situation many of this year’s events are being held virtually.

There are various events taking during October - from exhibitions to poetry, documentaries to webinars.

  • Sunday 18 October 2020 , Open mic poetry session to celebrate Black History Month. 2-4pm
  • Sunday 18 October 2020 - 5:00pm, England’s Hidden History: Black people in society in Tudor England.
  • Wednesday 21 October 2020 - 6:00pm, Huddersfield’s Caribbean Heritage: A Virtual Walk - no booking required.
  • Friday 23 October 2020 - 6:00pm, Windrush: Untold Stories - documentary and discussion.
  • Saturday 24 October 2020 - 12:00pm - 3:00pm, Caribbean History and Family History with Linford Sweeney.
  • Saturday 24 October 2020 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Our Story – A Brief Insight into our History, Culture and People.
  • Sunday 25 October 2020 - 5:00pm, Global Black History.
  • Wednesday 28 October 2020 - 6:00pm - 8:00pm, Celebrating BHM together sharing Poetry and The History of Negro-Spirituals/Black Gospel.
  • Friday 30 October 2020 - 2:00pm, Launch of Windrush Garden at Springwood - person event but places must be booked in advance online.
