Painting with Light - photographic exhibition at the Mining Museum

About this activity

Discover photographic responses by young people to our Martyn Pitt exhibition. These images were created in collaboration with local photographer, John Arnison, using similar techniques to what Pitt employed.

Students from Meden School in Mansfield, plus young people from our Home Education community, have looked at the techniques used by Arnison to light waterfalls at night and have linked this to the underground photography methods used by Martyn Pitt.

Arnison demonstrated long–exposure photography in the Powerhouse at Hope Pit, showcasing how to experiment with slow shutter speed and to paint with light using cap lamps.

With these new techniques learnt, students and our Home Ed community put them into practice to capture mining objects, experimenting with light to create their own photographs of items in the Museum’s collection in the dark, just like Martyn Pitt and John Arnison.

A select few works by the students will be put on display in the Museum, whilst the full collection will be on display digitally.
