History

  1. Gomersal Cricket Club – a brief history
Originally named Gomersal St Mary’s Cricket Club; the club was founded in 1881 by the village Vicar, Revd. R. F. Taylor. The club, when first formed, played their matches on a field near the Wheatsheaf Inn. This field was also shared by the local football team. The football team was in fact also founded by the sports mad clergyman. The club moved in 1892 to its current position in the village, on Oxford Road. The site that Gomersal Cricket Club now occupies was once Little Gomersal Colliery.
In 1927 the club changed their name from Gomersal St Mary’s to Gomersal Cricket Club.
From 1921 onwards various efforts were made by the club to raise funds to buy the ground and, in 1929 the purchase was complete.
The club was the pioneer in the district of carnivals and galas. In 1921 the first carnival was held and a crowd of between three and four thousand people entered the field.
At the end of the Second World War the club bought an ex-army Nissan hut and utilised this as the club tea room. This Nissan hut was used for over 30 years. In 1962 a bar was opened inside the hut.
In the early 1970’s the adjacent football pitch was sold for housing. This sale enabled the club to fund the building of the existing clubhouse and changing rooms.
A significant event in the club’s history was in 1984 when the first overseas player, named Tony Blain, was recruited by the club. Tony played for the club for two seasons and helped them to win the Heavy Woollen Cup Trophy for the first time in 1984. Tony later went on to represent New Zealand in test cricket. Various overseas players have been recruited since this time, the most recent recruitment being Ben Hyde, who is currently playing for the club.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s Gomersal Cricket Club enjoyed a successful period in their long history; winning the Central Yorkshire Cricket League Division One championship five times and also winning the Jack Hampshire Memorial Trophy five times. Prior to this, the club had also won the Heavy Woollen Cup four times, and the Yorkshire Council Championship play-offs five times.
In 2014 during the stormy month of February, the roof was ‘blown off’ the function room. Although this was quite an inconvenience at the time, this enforced a refurbishment of the function room and the clubhouse now looks better than ever.
The sense of community spirit and pride in the club displayed by the fundraising and commitment in the past continues in the committee, players, members, and staff to the present day. Gomersal Cricket Club is very busy offering junior cricket training and matches weekdays, and cricket matches, functions and events on weekends to the people of Gomersal and the surrounding areas. The history has made us what we are today and we are proud of this.
