The project engages children and young people in a variety of fun activities, including dance, performing arts, poetry, art and craft and theatre visits. We run a supplementary school which meets from 1 to 3pm on Saturdays, providing literacy and numeracy, small library of books by Black writers, break-dancing, Black history, visits and more. Our children's gospel group, age 6 to 19, (True Colours) have become very well known and performed at a number of high profile events eg Commonwealth Games, York Minster and St Martins in the Fields and with the Harlem Gospel Choir. During school holidays (particularly Summer), we run playschemes, attracting over 100 children and these are very popular. Not only do we encourage children and young people to have a say in the running of the project, but also build confidence and self esteem thereby helping them to reach their full potential.
We are a small number of volunteers, always looking for help from enthusiastic individuals, comprising of three teachers and three counsellors. We give advice and support to parents, particularly on educational matters and work on a one to one basis or small group with children experiencing difficulties in school. We have worked with groups such as Kreative Response, Jamrock Productions and Huddersfield Library.
