  1. The Kirkwood (Kirkwood Hospice) is registered charity which provides specialist palliative care for the people of Kirklees who have a life-threatening illness. This means that our care is aimed at improving a patient's quality of life rather than providing a cure. By listening to our patients and by having a flexible approach to caring we meet each patient's individual needs and wishes, helping them to make the most of the time that they have left.

Volunteers are always welcome at the Hospice, please contact us for more details.

In-patient care is provided in our newly extended and refurbished 16 bed unit. Care is provided by our dedicated specialist nursing team and extended multi-disciplinary team.

The Hospice has regular bereavement drop-ins for those bereaved due to a life threatening illness. Please contact the Family Care team for the date of the next one.

The Hospice also has regular bereavement evenings and individual counselling, a walking group for bereaved people, and has specialists in counselling children who are bereaved due to life threatening illness. Please contact the Family Care team for more details.

The Kirkwood has fundraising groups and charity shops throughout Kirklees, and volunteers are always welcome.

History

  1. Twenty Five Years of Care in Kirklees

On the 17th March 2012, Kirkwood Hospice celebrated a landmark - its 25th anniversary.

In June 1981, eight people met at the home of David Stocks to discuss the possibility of launching a local hospice appeal. That first meeting resulted in a commitment to begin fundraising and an initial collection of £4.50 from those attending the meeting.

Almost six years of fundraising followed including, in 1983, the amalgamation of the Huddersfield and Dewsbury hospice appeal funds and on 19th February 1986 David Stocks and De Alan Barlow MD laid the foundation stone for the new hospice building.

In 1987, the services provided by the Hospice extended only as far as the in-patient unit. However, 25 years on and the situation is quite different. Today the Hospice's 16 in-patient beds represent only one aspect of the care on offer. In addition, there is a thriving day care service and drop-in open four days a week in the Support & Therapy Centre, bereavement services for all the family via Kirkwood's specialist Family Care Team and a team of three palliative care nurses, providing advice and support in patients' own homes.

Contrary to popular belief, a hospice is not only a place where people stay at the end of their lives. Hospice services have developed over the years and pain and symptom management is an important part of the care now provided. This means that patients may visit the hospice many times as their illness progress
