History

  1. In 1989 the community of Thornhill Lees began to speak of having their own Community Centre after a decade of hard work and fundraising Thornhill Lees Community Centre was opened on May the 8th 2001 along with the Doctor's Surgery and Nurses station next door. Following this a membership was created, the members then voted for the trustees they wanted to take responsibility and run their centre, the trustees have responsibility for hiring staff. Originally planned to be somewhere for local people of all ages to meet for activities and events the centre has grown and become much more.
An extension to the original building in 2003 created a purpose built multi use space for young people; this was funded in the main by Lottery. In 2009 Kirkees Metropolitan Council opened a Library and Information Centre and Sure Start Children centre adjoining the Community Centre together this has created the Hub of Thornhill Lees.
The Community Centre now comprises of a large hall, a large room for young people's activities and games, an IT room, café and reception area, a well equipped kitchen and offices and stores, with the whole building being easily accessible for all.
